Sideline and VCOM are working together for our athletes

Dr Eastwood and Dr Eck Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is the official provider of sports medicine for Blacksburg High School Athletics.  VCOM provides both a sports medicine fellow and an athletic trainer for the school so that the student athletes can compete safely, and be secure in the knowledge that there are skilled medical professionals on site for their needs.

This year’s sports medicine fellow, Dr. Brandon Eck, is working with VCOM to acquire the general orthopedic and medical knowledge necessary to evaluate and treat athletes.  He is also learning to work alongside athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons and other providers to create a holistic, comprehensive, and team approach to the management of the patient athlete.  This philosophy is designed to treat the entire person, not just the symptoms the person exhibits.  For example, if an athlete is exhibiting the symptoms of a pulled hamstring, the on site doctors and trainers may use a combination of massage, stretching, and possibly medication to treat the athlete.  The whole body approach is one that is embraced by both VCOM and Sideline Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Bart Eastwood, an Associate Professor of Sports Medicine at VCOM, makes it a point to work the sidelines with Dr. Eck and support Blacksburg High School .  Dr. Eastwood and Dr. Eck work together, sharing their knowledge and skills to provide peace of mind to the athletes and their parents that they’re in safe, knowledgeable hands.  Sideline Orthopedics and Sports Medicine works in conjunction with VCOM and the community to support the needs of the team, the athletes, and the community.
